My sister and I had our rental car delivered to our hotel this morning and after getting reaquainted with left side-of-the-road driving, we were on our way. Driving in South Africa is much like driving in other countries. So far, the major highways have had shoulders practically the width of another lane, meaning you can drive on the shoulder so someone can pass you while traffic is coming the other way. Very convenient. Something not convenient is the system of writing street names inconspiciously on the side of the curbs rather than using street signs. This made it difficult for us when we visited Stellenbosch, our first stop of the day.

Stellenbosch is a busting town and we were lucky to find parking near the information center. Don't expect a meter; here you must use parking attendents, who will ask for tips when you are ready to leave. While Stellenbosch is known for its famous wineries, we decided just to stop for lunch, as we were heading to Robertson, another well-known wine area. Stellenbosch is fairly touristy, with a crafts market, gifts shops and restaurants, so of course it was very crowded when we were there.
Next we arrived in Robertson, our first overnight stop on our roadtrip. Robertson was delightfully empty after the crowds of Stellenbosch. Despite the 37 C heat, we enjoyed dinner under the fans at the Bourbon Street Restaurant. Best of all is returning to the Ballinderry Guesthouse, where a well-fanned room awaited us. We were delightfully surprised by the delivery of two evening chocolates - yum! If only it wasn't too hot to enjoy being outside!
