These photos of Fort Funston really speak for themselves.  It's one of those spots I like to frequent in San Francisco so I can marvel at the simple fact that I live somewhere so breathtaking.

This amazing park and beach, like most in San Francisco, costs NOTHING. The landscaping is immaculate and I've never seen any trash or debris on the trails. You simply park, look out at the overlook or head down the trails to the beach, and marvel at the scenery.

How to get there:   Get on Highway 35 in San Francisco, pass John Muir Drive, then take the first right (there will be signs).  Or drive to Ocean Beach first via Lincoln Ave or Sloat Blvd or whatever route you usually take, and then on towards John Muir Drive.

Who hangs out there:   People with dogs, hang-gliders, kite-flyers, hikers, equestrians, beach lovers, walkers, and anyone who likes to get outdoors.

A note about accessibility:  Walk the paved Sunset Trail if you have physical limitations with steep heights or unstable ground, because the Sand Ladder Trail that goes down to the beach from the parking lot can be pretty difficult. It's not  a long trail, but it's made of sand so it's slippery and, as loose, dry sand does when on a steep dune, it cascades from underneath you as you walk. There are logs in a loose step formation and, at parts, a rope handrail, but not covering the whole trail.

Some of the trails in this area take you up over beautiful sand dunes, which can also be steep for some.  Children and anyone without physical limitations (or fear of heights) will love scrambling on all the various levels.
