Dubrovnik
From Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia & Sicily, Italy Summer 2007 in Dubrovnik, Croatia on Jul 09 '07
Greetings from Dubrovnik Croatia, After a 24 hour journey from Dallas we landed in Dubrovnik. Only 14 hours on 2 planes. In coach. OHY ! We were here in 2004 and wanted to start our 6 week trip with a familiar comfortable place to relax at the beginning of a long journey. We checked into our apartment in old town by climbing only 114 steps strait up hill to the top of old town. When reaching the top, oxygen was not provided. LOL After a brief nap we climbed back down the steps to the center of old town for a very exciting evening. We managed to have dinner at an outdoor cafe. (you didn't think we would miss a meal) After dinner we observed the opening ceremony of the summer festival of symphony and folk dancing and the raising of the Croatian flag in the town square. There were thousands of people jammed in old town for this festival event. All the royalty was announced, but of course we were not! After the raising of the flag and the conclusion of the symphony, the audience climbed the walls and cliffs to watch the grand finale, a spectacular fireworks show. After the fireworks show, then we took a short stroll Thur old town, resisting the call of gelato shops, we climbed the 114 steps for a well deserved night of rest. The next morning, as we strolled Thur town, we observed all the tourists and Croatians having their European breakfast. A cigarette and a cappuccino! One of the most spectacular events to do in Dubrovnik is climbing the walls of the city. Its about a 1.2 kilo walk around the walls. The walls are preserved and were built between the 8th century and the 16th century, as a defense to protect the city. The old city is only accessed over 1 of two stone bridges ending onto a draw bridge over moats. The old city is surrounded by water on 3 sides. Keep in mind that it was only 15 years ago that this country and this city was under attack and liberated. As you walk the walls of the city you will observe a sea of red tile roofs, spectacular Adriatic ocean views, rugged cliffs, surrounding islands, the old marina, and beautiful teal blue water. Please enjoy some Pictures that are attached here.
OHY ITS BEAUTIFUL
