Coming home to Colorado is always an experience. In the past 6 years, I have only returned home on short vacations, and the occasional trips have developed in to a predictable pattern. I arrive home exhausted from taking exams, traveling the world, working for the summer, and proceed to arrive in beautiful Colorado for what seems like the sole purpose of sleeping excessively and being grumpy. After a few days of Rip Van Winkle-like behavior, I return to the world of social beings. It is at this time that I realize I have no friends in Fort Collins anymore, and therefore will be spending the duration of my vacation with my Grandmother. Not that spending time with my favorite little old lady is a chore, its a main reason I come home, and something I look forward to all year. And I suppose its not true that I do not have any friends here anymore- my friends from High School are still here- they are all just married, married with children, or just as close-minded and boring as they were in High School. My best friend from High School lives in Denver, and while she is still someone I keep in touch with and respect greatly, she is a busy banker, with an equally busy banker husband and a high-maintenance dog- so our schedules rarely coincide to allow for a visit. Guess thats what life is like when you grow up and move away.

There are a lot of things I really love about Fort Collins. I love that I can roll out of bed in the morning, throw on running shorts and a teeshirt, go to the mall- and totally fit in. I love that I live next to corn fields and farmers with a breathtaking view of the mountains. I love that you can shop at Target, and Walmart, Sams-Club and huge grocery stores. Its a quiet town, people are friendly and polite and most people here love living here. It was a really remarkable place to grow up. Coming back is always special- I miss my family a lot while I am away, and there is nothing better than spending quality time with the people that love you, the people that loved you when you were a rotten teen ager- and the people that will continue to love you whether or not you ever become a successful lawyer.
