On Saturday morning after picking up some groceries we drove north towards the Grampians National Park. We called into the visitor centre in Dunkeld, in the southern Grampians, and found that the campground we had planned to stay at was closed for restoration after the fire in January 2006. We reconsidered the list of campsites available and settled on Borough Huts, 10kms from Halls Gap in the central Grampians.
Borough Huts was a lovely open campground with lots of fireplaces, tables and flat bases for tents. It was a beautiful sunny afternoon so after setting up we sat around and enjoyed the sunshine. Some very friendly Rosellas joined us around dusk landing on the picnic table where I was cooking dinner. We found there were lots of birds in the Grampians; huge flocks of Sulphur Crested Cockatoos would fly over during the day. We usually heard their screeching before we saw them!

After dinner Bren made a fire and we sat around and listened to Triple J. Not that different to a Saturday night at home… except we drank coffee not beer and went to bed around 10pm. It wasn’t too cold, but camping makes you tired!
Next day we walked up Mt William, the highest peak in the Grampians NP. The walk was a sealed road closed to traffic, but it was so steep. We struggled a bit, but eventually reached the top, huffing and puffing. The view was definitely worth the climb; a full 360o view of the Grampians mountains, and the flat plains surrounding them. We spent an hour at the summit taking photos, resting, and enjoying the view. The warm clear weather made the view even more spectacular.
