I want to go here
From Honors Trip 2007 in Haiti on Mar 31 '07
I took a class this semester called Minority Voices. Dr. Asselin Charles taught it and it has made me want to go and visit Haiti. He is from Haiti but has travelled around the world and even lived in places like Taiwan. The country has been considered third world for sometime but is attempting to improve. I read a book entitled, Breath, Eyes, Memory by Edwidge Danticat. The book is a heart-wrenching tale about a woman who struggles to deal with the sometimes painful traditions of her people and her own struggle with assimilating in the United States. This story made my heart go out to these people who have fought for their independence, been ravished by war, but still they are strong and mighty. I would love to go see their land and meet the people. Dr. Charles has said that he might try to get her to come and speak to us here at Mount Olive College next year. I hope that comes true. I think that it would be a rewarding experience for all of us here at Mt. Olive to hear her personal struggle and triump with post-colonialism, migration, and cultural identity.
