We took a few buses and got to the san jose car rental place in super quick time (not sure i should take this as a typical example of south and central american public transport efficiency though).  We picked up ourt little 4x4 and set off for La Fortuna - "lava viewing capital of central america".  well the top of the volcano was in cloud when we arrived - as it was for much of our time in La Fortuna- but the vocano was certainly very big and volcano shaped.  we mooched around town, occasionally glancing up ward checking for lava and generally being amazed that   almost everthing that is nailed town has been turned into a "tourist information office".

Next day we went to "Catarata La Fortuna" - and impressive waterfall in a jungly bowl.  swam round and behind it but not underneath it as apparently this could cause death!!  Then we went to "Volcan Arenal National Park" where we saw some old lava, but not any hot lava, and also howler monkeys and chattering toucans.  In the evening we went to Tabacon Hot springs Spa and Resort.  This was expensive but rather luxurious - many hot rivers and waterfalls and pools and a wet bar and old american people.  and you can see the lava from the springs - when there isn't any cloud!
