A Day in Siena
From Interrailing around Europe in Siena, Italy on Aug 13 '06
Siena is a medieval town 2 hours by train from Florence. An early morning was not too welcome but proved worth it in the end. Our rail passes worked fine this time and we walked into the town centre from the station.
The 'Campo' (town centre) was prepared for the famous horse race which takes place on the 16th (which we deliberately avoided because of crowd issues!) which was pretty interesting. The town is divided into 16 sectors which each provides a horse to race. As we went around the town you could see the flag of each sector flying and Lauren took to the "Goose" sector and bought a copy.

The Duomo (Cathedral) was very impressive, different to the architecture of both Florence and Rome. The attached museum was great, sculptures, frescoes, pictures and topped off with a great view from the top of an unfinished section of a proposed extention to the Duomo.
The now traditional afternoon ice cream break signalled the end of our trip with us both impressed by the small town. A 'scenic' route to the station, a 2 hour sleep on the train, and we were back in Florence.
