The following day we did some last minute sight seeing in Wurzburg and left in our rental car to follow the Romantische Straße (Romantic Road) down to Fussen. Our first stop overnight was at Rothenburg. This is a relatively small city in Bavaria but the old walled city is not to be missed.

We had made reservations on the Internet ahead of time at the Pension Mayer. When we got to Rothenburg we couldn't find the address so we stopped at a gas station/mini-mart  to ask directions. Unfortunately the attendants English was not much better than my Deutsche. However there was a young lady paying for her gas that spoke very good English and told me to follow her and her Mom when the left the station and they would lead us to it. We did and found ourselves stopping in a quiet residential neighborhood in front of a liquor store/liquor distributor. We thanked them for showing us the way and reluctantly looked around for the "Pension". I found a locked door leading upstairs and rang the bell. A gentleman came down to let us in and took us up to show us our room. What a pleasant surprise! A large clean comforatable room, ensuite, well furnished and very comfortable. There were about 5 or 6 rooms, but we only observed one other rented out while we were there. There was also  a  large community kitchen to cook in.

We asked the owner for a recommendation of where to eat, - where he would go himself and he directed us to a beer garden in the Old City. It was a  wonderful experience. Good, reasonably priced food, good beer most of the customers were native,  and  in  the back room was a  mens  group  of some kind singing.... something like right out of the movies!  Dinner BTW  was about 9 or 10 Euros each.
