Hikkaduwa 2!!
From Hambantota Adventures! in Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka on Feb 01 '08
Breaky at the hotel and then a relaxing swim, before getting ready to check out. Bought a pretty pink top from one of the shops, while heading to our recommended restaurant called the Kingfisher. By going along the road managed to take the long way round and seemed like we backtracked ourselves nearly landing back at the Peacock hotel! Finally we found it after our trek with a much deserved tandoori chicken wrap, which was indeed divine!
Now time for the bus adventure to Hikkaduwa… We must have caught the sixth bus that came past us as they either weren’t the right ones or were the right ones and annoyingly went straight past us! Eventful to say the least with us hurling them down each time and once the bus drove away while some of us got on thinking it was correct and then realised the opposite! Tried to rush eagerly with all our bags as so didn’t want to wait any longer, but was hard work with everyone on it! Majority of us standing but EmJ and I managed to find seats next to each other with a Colombo dude and felt like peas in a pod – I think they’re made for skinny Sri Lankans! Made a friend, as was unsure about when to get off and when arrived quicker than thought, to then get to Why Not hotel. After a trek the direction we’d come from, we found they didn’t even booked us! Hassle finding another as everyone was down this weekend – foreigners and Sri Lankans from Colombo, for relaxation, get away from bombings and to celebrate 60 years of independence for the coming Monday. Seemed to search high and low and when sitting for drinks found that the restaurant also had rooms in their hotel (like many!). Thankfully they were an acceptable standard by all, unlike the other 2 of 500 rupees = £2.50 for double and triple rooms. Instead this was 3,500 rupees = £17.50, so expected high standards from this with the amount we were paying. Cough cough! Well we were wrong…
This day was not a good day with no electricity (ok from power cuts, but later was just our floor!), no shower water let along hot like stated and no A/C which we were especially paying for. We were all fuming, so frustrated! I tried having a shower when the lights went out and searched for the shower, as had no idea where it was. It seemed to be high up but no water was coming from the taps. I then had the bright idea of using the basin with the plug in it. Lights came back on, with Rachel showing me where exactly bthe shower is and that it wasn’t the hot water tank! Had a shower with some trickling water and ended up with the power shower foot washer. Also managed to get the sink stuck with nothing to get it out with! Oops!
Had a meal at the hotel and again that was a mistake as took an hour for the food to come. Very bland, not hot or spicy and unlike a chicken curry with nothing else except that, rice and chicken. That was it, upt and left and had pudding at a trusty place at Refresh. Rodrick met us earlier and Rachel and I joined him at the lengthy hour of 11.30pm after our meal was finally over. Met up with his mates, Juti, Abu and Jimmal, Vipola, along with others at Funky Bar; chatted, ate chocolate and banana yummy rotis and had magic tricks played on us by Jimmal! Then danced away back at the renown Mambos!
