Charleston was beautiful. My family and I stayed on Seabrook Island – about 45 min. away from the city – we spent most of our time during the first half of the week in Charleston and then we were always on the beach during the second half of the week. While in the city we mostly stuck to the historic district, although it seemed that took up almost all of the downtown area. We took two tours, well I guess three if you count Fort Sumter. The first was a “Haunts of Charleston” tour. Our guide walked us through the largest graveyard in the city and then took us to several buildings that are supposed to be spooked. The graveyard was really awesome; there were headstones dating back to before the Civil War. Plus, the church in front of the graveyard was gorgeous. Our next tour was a Carriage ride. The guide was funny, in fact everyone that I met was really nice. Rachel liked the carriage ride b/c we actually had a horse instead of a mule. The next day Dad wanted to tour Fort Sumter, so we took a ferry over there and then walked around the Ft. for a bit… there wasn’t much there, just a bunch of old cannons and this sweet 4’thick brick wall. That’s all the major activities we did in the city… we mostly stuck to walking around, seeing the sights. About 80% of the sidewalks downtown are made of these huge slabs of slate. Around the Battery is a raised walkway that butts up to the ocean/inlet – we walked along here for a ways; it’s lined with HUGE beautiful houses. We also found a large dock that you can go out onto and watch the different boats in the inlet – there were some really cool swings here. The rest of the week was spent on the beach; luckily our condo was right across the street from it. Alan perfected his skim boarding techniques while Rachel tanned. Alan tried to teach me how to board again, another fail… I’ve decided to stick to snowboarding and wakeboarding, sports where I’m actually connected to the board. We got back to Colonial Heights Sat. evening, and I finished packing the car, said goodbye to my family, and headed up to Woodbridge to meet Jeff. Sat. 18 was his birthday so we stayed at his mothers until Monday, then left early for Blacksburg so see some friends before heading west.
