Day 27 - Paris, France - June 30
From Western Europe Peregrination in Paris, France on Jun 29 '07
We woke up late today because we both didn't sleep very well in our hotel room. We headed out into Paris at about 12 pm. Our first stop today was the Louvre which was tremendous because of its size. We didn't actually go in because it would take up too much of our day to see any of it. We then went to a bridge overlooking the main river going through Paris and watched the boats go by and this also enabled us to see the Eiffel Tower off in the distance and also offered a panoramic view of the city. The next stop was the Notre Dame cathedral which we happened to hit at exactly the right time, there was a choir and an organ that echoed throughout the whole cathedral and set the mood. What made this visit extra special is that we found the burial of Saint Denis in the building. Saint Denis is a martyr who is in Taylor's family line who lived and died in France. We also found a statue of Saint Denis on the opposite side of the cathedral. After the Cathedral, we strolled over towards the metro to take us over to another site. While walking we picked up lunch and sat on another bridge overlooking the water. The next stop was the Egyptian obelisk from Luxor which is the oldest human made object in France dating back to 1200 B.C. After the obelisk, we walked along the Champs-Elysees which is supposed to be the grandest walk in Paris and it's also full of history; this is where Hitler marched right after he took over France. We stopped for cafe as the walk to the arch de triomphe is 2 miles down the rue. Taylor also saw the headquarters of Louis Vuitton that is located on the street, very exciting for her. The Arche was big...
After this, we walked to the Eiffel Tower to take a trip up (On the walk over we saw Collin Farell eating dinner at a restaurant). We had to stand in line almost two hours to get in but it was something we thought would be worthwhile. We actually chose the most opportune time to visit because as the elevator was going to the top the lights on the Eiffel Tower turned on and ten minutes later a second set of lights started flashing all over the tower, very cool. At this point it was about 11 at night and we were dying for food. We tried going back to the place we ate the night before but all the buses were shut down because it was gay pride day in Paris. We ate at a random restaurant we found in the city and it was interesting because the waitress was pretty rude to us. We took the metro home and went to bed at around 2 in the morning.
