A marvelous introduction to Rajasthani culture...

Despues de 5 días en Delhi, he llegado a la tierra de los Maharajas, RAJASTHAN! En la antiguedad esta provincia estaba constituída por 22 reinos. Hoy en día algunos fuertes y palacios permanecen abiertos al público en general, mientras que otros han sido convertidos por sus descendientes en hoteles de lujo. Con la llegada de los ingleses, las familias reales perdieron su poder politico, no obstante, mantuvieron sus títulos nobiliarios y su estilo de vida (algunos Maharajas vivían 6 meses en la India y el resto del año en Inglaterra). Perdieron su poder absoluto con la Independencia de la India.

Esta es una region desértica es común encontrar camellos por la calle... pero los fenómenos meteorológicos no han olvidado esta región y el año pasado hubo inundaciones catastróficas por la lluvia recibida...

Mi primer parada fue Jaipur, la Ciudad Rosada. La decisión de pintar toda edificación del centro histórico con este color fue tomada el siglo pasado para recibir al Rey Eduardo VII. El color es un tanto más naranja que rosa ;)

Hay una de zapatos, bolsas y faldas para morir! He resistido la tentacion ;) Y aqui el regateo es otra similitud con México, a todos los turistas nos ven cara de gringos y nos dobletean o triplícan los precios! Asi que la negociacion se convierte en arte!

He tenido la fortuna de ser peregrina entre hindues :) Primero en casa de la familia de mis amigos en Delhi,  Lindos, lindos!  Me hicieron sentir como en casa de la abuela, quieren que comas todo el tiempo! jejeje :)  Luego me mude a casa de la familia de su mejor amigo, e igual, nada como estar en familia! Su cuñada me presto uno de sus saris para mostrarme como se ata! Es super complicado, necesitaría una semanita para agarrarle la onda, eso si, no me voy de India sin aprender!

I am now in the state of the Maharajas, Rajasthan! Although the royalty lacks any sort of political power, they still hold their title and continue to live like kings :) You can visit some of their palaces and forts to get an idea of what India was like back then or you may stay in one of the palaces that have been turned into luxurious hotels.

This is a very desertic region, you can easily spot camels on the street... it hardly ever rains but probably because of global warming, last year the city got flooded because of the heavy rains...

My first stop was Jaipur, the PINK capitol. Since last century, on the occasion of welcoming Edward the 7th, the whole city was ordered to be painted pink! (It is actually salmon-like). So as you can tell, the relationship between the rulers of Rajasthan and the English people was good. Some members of the royal family used to live 6 months here and 6 months in the UK...

The old city, surrounded by a big wall, is the commercial center, it is all painted in salmon. Here you will see to-dye-for shoes, skirts, bags... surprisingly I resisted temptation ;) Bargainig is another similarity with Mexico... they think all foreigers are Americans with big fortunes! so they raise the prices double or even triple... here negotiation becomes an art ;)

I have been very lucky to be a pilgrim among hindues ;)  I stayed at the home of 2 families who received me with total affection, I will remain forever grateful to them as they made my stay more enjoyable :) I was taught how to wrap a sari, good try! I boast myself for being a fast learner, but this will take more time ;)
