It was nearly time to pick up our new toy (a camping car or motorhome) so we headed to Brittany to Ploumanac’h.

Hypothermia was beginning to set in (no heating in the caravan) so we splashed out on a hotel enroute and booked ourselves a mobile home in West Camping. The mobile home and the campsite was great – the owners were very friendly and helpful and we would definitely recommend it.

The scenery is absolutely spectacular with huge boulders of pink granite towering above the sea.

They did look a bit concerned/amazed at the stuff that came out of our caravan. In fact they lent us a second mobile home to put it all in, and we nearly filled that one too - Incroyable! The trusty caravan was finally emptied and cleaned and was looking pretty good for the big swaperoo.

Getting on to the area… Ploumanac’h is near Lannion and is part of the Perros Guirec area of the Cote du Granite Rose (the coast of pink granite). The scenery is absolutely spectacular with huge boulders of pink granite towering above the sea. The beaches are part sand and part crushed pink granite rocks. It’s the only place we’ve seen a solid pink granite table and chairs as a ‘park bench’ – the table even had a polished top!!

If you ever get to the area there is a lovely beach to the west of the ‘town centre’ where Jay practiced his climbing skills. To the east of the town there is an excellent walk along the old customs path. This path was used for spotting smugglers landing on the coast. The path takes you past huge granite boulders and more beaches suitable for exploration by bored 3 year olds and their dads.

The town centre is fairly small and fairly forgettable. For the camping carista there is an excellent and free aire du service in Tregastel about 5 mins drive from the campsite. Across the road is a nice Super U (supermarket) and possibly the friendly hardware shop I have ever been in (very useful for buying bits to fit out the garage of your new camping car).

Dave.
