Saint Avold - American Cemetary
From The trip to Europe in Saint-Avold, France on Sep 10 '06
We arrived in St. Avold, France the evening of September 11th. Upon arrival, we realized we did not have Grandma's luggage, but instead had a fellow Americans bag that looked very much like Grandma's bag!!!!! Needless to say this was a huge bummer as we had just driven all the way from Luzern, Switzerland to St. Avold.
After contacting the hotel in Luzern, contacting the fellow American and drinking a few beers/glasses of wine, the gang decided to drive back to Luzern to pick-up Grandma's bag and return the luggage to our fellow American - who would be in Zurich the next day!!!!! Such fun.....

So, the next morning we all got up and visited the cemetery together before one of the cars headed to Paris and the other back to Switzerland.
The cemetery was a very moving experience and even if you do not have family buried at the cemetery it would still be such an emotional experience to see all those who sacrificed their lives for us. It is really an incredible place. It was especially emotional for our family as my Grandma's first husband (Gerald) was killed during the war and was buried in St. Avold. Gerald was also my aunt's father and he was killed before she was able to meet him. No way to really put into words the experience, but it was definitely worth the trip and was worth the side trip back to Switzerland!
