  • 1. Jordan Lake State Recreational Area, Apex NC

April 29 - Poplar Point 579 sites - Loop F site 36   with senior discount $14 water and electric

So many campgrounds to choose from!

This campground is one of three in the Jordan Lake State  Recreation Area that has RV camping (Parkers Creek and Crosswinds), there is another for RV groups only Vista Point and one area just for tents New Hope Overlook.  We did not have reservations and at this time of year did not need them but at this time they only accepted reservations for 7 days or more.  The ranger came around to the site to collect the money and at this time he told us that Crosswinds and Poplar Point are going on a state reservations system beginning April 22 for dates July on.  Now you can make reservations for one night or up to 14 and the website is www.ncparks.gov/reservations.php

There are a lot of sites on the water and we selected one in the woods looking out over the water so that we could put the kayak in right from our site.  Nice site.  All sites have a table, fire ring, and alot have water and electricity. We rode our bikes around all the loops in this campground A-J and it is huge with many, many nice sites.  There is a boat dock so that motor boats can be put in and then brought over to your campsite if it is on the water.  A nice beach area on Jordan Lake which is huge.  This recreational area was built by the COE and the campgrounds are designed like typical COE parks.  Many sites have electric and water but some in the same loop do not so check the map when you go past the ranger station.  You can pick up a site map to help you even if the ranger is not there they leave a box of them at the station.

The campground host and hostess at our loop F were amazing - the two of them scrubbed, cleaned, and even waxed the showers and bathrooms.  Using their own money they placed flowers, hand soap, paper towels, shower rods and curtains and even a basket of items one might forget like shampoo, creams, soaps to use in the bathrooms.  They only ask that you use what you need but don't take anything out - leave it for someone else.  Other campers even put extra items in there and some even drop off some money at their site to help with the purchase of paper towels and everything else they provide.  The cleanest and nicest smelling bathrooms I have seen.  We really enjoyed our one night stay here the weather was great, the kayaking really good with calm water going around many inlets and coves, nice bike ride over hills and dales and friendly hosts and other campers.

Our Day - not much to add to above comments.  We left Chapel Hill around 9:30 and took a road that that the owner told us to and low and behold we drove down a narrow beautiful winding road over lakes until we reached the Jordan Lake area by 11.  The campground was easy to find and the directions at the ranger station was easy to follow.  George and I had a great day biking, kayaking and enjoying the views of a huge lake.  George is getting better with his paddling.  The fish in this lake are jumping - if we had a net we could have caught them from the shore with no effort at all.  Tomorrow we head off to the biggest pottery town in the world and then to stay at another National Forest.
