Second Day in Oslo
From Europe in 2008 in Oslo, Norway on Apr 25 '08
This morning started at 7am. Wake up and pack our bags for changing of room. Same hotel but different room.
We head out to the main street to grab breakfast and find the shops are not open. It's early so we think nothing of it. Instead head over to 7-11 and grab pizza and pastry, a very unhealthy breakfast.
The weather is cloudy and cold. We head to Oslo Centralen station to get money exchanged. It was deserted and all the stores closed. The only people around were other travelers sleeping on the benches. We sit with them and enjoyed our unhealthy breakfast. Head to the tourist info to get directions to Frognerparken- Vigeland Sculpture Park.
We walk through Karl Johans gate street and took some pictures and made our way towards the parliament on wards to the sculpture park. At first we sat at the wrong tram stop waiting. Luckily we were directed to the right tram stop located on Stroget street. Tram 12 is the correct one and for 30kr it was a 15 min tram ride to the park.
Arriving at the park, there were plenty other tourist already filling up the park. I can imagine if the weather was sunny, this will be a perfect way to relax. The park is grand and as you walk through the gates you can see the statues lined up. We see the giant phallus which is a tall sculptured pole, it is so detailed and something to marvel at. The statues are very erotic with male and females entwined. We spend a good 2hrs in the park before decide to hurry to catch the last tram back into the city.
We randomly decide to hop off the tram at the Aker Brygge which is where the shopping mall is located. It's nicely located near the waters. Unfortunately we found earlier in the morning that everything is closed on Sunday in Oslo, inclusive of shops. So we decide on a walk through the pier.
We walk over to Akershus Fortress castle – which was built in 1779. Entry is free. It took us about 40 minutes to walk through the external parts of the castle and the viewing points to see the wonderful views of harbor known as Oslofjord.
We were disappointed as tours for inside of the castle are on Thursday. We will miss out. After the castle we head into town and make a short stop at the mini bottle gallery. A gallery just filled with thousands of small bottles. The mannequins on display dressed in garments made out of mini bottles. It was closed but having read my lonely planet book it stated it cost 85kr to enter the gallery but from the window I could see inside and that was enough or me. Interesting but not sure if it would be worth the entry fee. I might be wrong.
We make our way back to main street and drop into burger king for some lunch then returning to our hotel for a short rest.
We rest as my poor Lyn tries to sew up my busted luggage. I am having no luck with my luggages since leaving Australia.
We rested in the hotel until 9pm and headed out to locate TeddyÅ› Soft Bar and Mona Lisa Cafe and bar. The streets were bare and it was raining. Not the most pleasant night to be out. Realizing everything was closed apart from a couple of other bars on the main strip we aborted mission and option for a stroll where we stopped by for some coffee at 7-11.
I decided to have beef kebab at Snak. It was a very quiet Sunday and a very deserted night in Oslo. This could be due to the fact it was Sunday and the fact the weather was dreadful . It was nice to get a few pictures of the city by night. However apart from us and a few other tourist it almost felt like a ghost town in Oslo.
We resort back to our hotel and by midnight we were sleeping like logs.
Next stop tomorrow.. Brussels,Belgium. but before we head off, we plan to go souvenir shopping and visit the The Royal Palace.
