Deruta
Next on the list was the Umbrian hill town of Deruta. Deruta is famous for its cermics and we were keen to visit. We took the back roads from Montefalco and really enjoyed the trip at a leisurely pace. Umbria is just full of medieval villages and I thought this one on the way was remarkable. Peaceful, unknown and just lovely.
As soon as we reached the town of Deruta, the reason for its fame was evident. There were ceramics factories and outlets everywhere. The ceramics from Deruta are famous for their quality (and their prices!). We toured several outlets and just admired these beautiful ceramics. They have been making them here for hundreds of years and some of the ancient designs are produced by all the companies. They are ALL hand decorated and some of them are stunning.

Then we decided to explore the ancient town and it was so small, but very ancient and beautiful. It had two towers in the main street and also lots of retailers selling you know what. Just for the memory of the pleasant day we were having, we bought two wall plates of medieval design. We wandered through the rest of the town and found a lovely place for lunch looking back over the Umbrian valley. It was a nice way to round off another lovely day of exploring Umbria.
