Getting North
From The Big One in Oslo, Norway on Sep 15 '07
After departing Copenhagen bright and early we pretty much spent the day on the train. After a few ours we had left demark and were travelling through Sweeden. A quick change of trains in Sweeden and we were on our way to Oslo. We arrived in Oslo at about 5pm.
We didn't for once need to work out the public transport system just yet! Our hostel (sentrum Pensjonat) was just a 5 minute walk from the station (less without the backpacks). We were sharing a room here with 4 others. On the first night it was with 3 sweedish girls and a young chap from Holland. On the second night the same girls and an Aussie (At least Aussies are not as common as they are in London).
After unloading the backpacks we took the opportunity to get a quick orientation of the city. We walked up the main street, Karl Johans Gate,. We attempted to find a resturant to eat dinner but it was all pretty pricey. So being the true backpackers we found a 7-11 (how cultured) and got some cheap grub. I forgot to mention that it rained the whole time here. Nothing too heavy just annoying.
Next day was the day for our sightseeing. First we got a bus to the Viking boat museum. It was small but it was extremely interesting. They had original viking berial boats that they had dug up some time ago. It is really amazing to see that all the materials could last so long and so well preserved.
After the museum we caught a ferry accross the harbour and then a tram to Vingard Park. This park is basically a housing for a lot of nude scuplture. It was all very tastefully done. In no particular order it kind of displayed the stages you go through in life. There were so many statues that it could not have been 1 person who did them all but we are pretty sure that they were atleast designed by 1 artist. We took some time out here for late lunch (we made some sandwiches on the top of the hill).
We headed back to the main railway station and book tickets on the flam railway and ferry and also some accomodation in Bergin. After that it was getting late again so we went back to the hostel. We saw that the TV show 'scrubs' was on in the common room so we plonked down and watched that. It gave us a few giggles. We discovered that you could borrow movies for free from the front desk. We took the opportunity to watch Million dollar baby, which neither of us had seen. It is a little hard to watch a movie in a shared common room but it was a pretty good movie.
That is pretty much it for Oslo!
