Fireflies at Night

We headed off from KL once we'd grabbed food. and for RM2.80 headed 2 hours to Kuala Selangor; it's a nature park on a smaller scale to Taman Negara and easier to access. The park entrance fee is RM4 pp but we decided to stay in an A-frame at the park that cost RM25. It had just rained and the mozzys were felling feisty.
With a liberal application of DEET we braved a walk through the park. It's very straightforward (just watch out for the monkeys, Adrienne got in between a male and his family and it was ready to attck, bearing his teeth and growling at her!) and easy to have a wander, plus we were entertained by chats with the 45 environmental science students from Plymouth Uni (in England). One poor guy got stuck knee deep in muddy estuary, while trying to get a water sample. That made our walk! It was also pretty awesome to see eagles circling far above us, and see fish jumping from one puddle to the next in the mangroves.

The main attraction in Kuala Selangor are the fireflies. We left at 7:30pm by the taxi (RM30) and by 8pm we were on a boat for a 30min trip to see these natural Christmas lights. At RM10 pp, we thought it a great deal. We cruised along quietly, on an electric boat, marvelling at the masses of twinkling lights in the mangrove trees. The fireflies were a great end to our day and made the mosquitos that bit more bearable during the night. Here's an exciting video.

We woke early to get the 7am bus from the town centre, only to find out that the bus has it's own timetable. After waiting an hour we grabbed a taxi to the bus terminal (RM5) to get the reliable bus no.141 back to KL.
