We love Colonia! After just a short ferry ride from Buenos Aires we were transported to a small colonial town with cobble stone streets everywhere.  The quaint plazas were even dotted with locals dressed up in old colonial era garb, which was neat, but also kind of creepy, as they looked like they wanted to tap your shoulder and whisk you away to some type of hades. Colonia, an UNESCO site, houses Uruguay´s oldest church.

After a night in Colonia, we visited Montevideo, the Southern most capital of South America!  While we enjoyed walking through the plazas, craft fairs and grilled meat fest - it didn´t quite compare to Buenos Aires.

Hello, I will be visiting Montevideo this October, did you find the city to be safe? I live close to NYC, so if you could relate its measure of safety to an area of Manhattan I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance Carlos

Thank you for helping to put my mind at ease. Ironically I was born in Montevideo but have not visited as an adult. (According to those who know me well, in my 45 years I have still not reached adulthood) I hear so many different things about the crime situation in Montevideo I don’t know who to believe. All of my elderly relatives tell me that crime is out of control in the city, but they are comparing it to 60 years prior. As most people have suggested, if I use proper caution, I will not have a problem. Thanks again for your input. Enjoy your future travels. Regards Carlos

We found the city to be safe. There were times when we felt like the only people on the street (siesta time), but we never felt threatened. We can´t really compare it to nyc, too different. In general though, you shouldn´t have any problems.
