Trevi, Assisi, Black Celery and Olives
From Pete and Bams' European Adventure in Trevi, Italy on Mar 23 '06
After a train trip from Venice into the heart of Italy (the province of Umbria), we picked up our hire car in Perugia. This was our first experience and attempt at driving on the wrong side of the road and the wrong side of the car. There were near misses with the local post box, dairy cows and on coming traffic, but we arrived safely in Trevi, a delightful historic village in the hills of the Umbrian provence.
Trevi is known as the olive oil capital of Italy and for its fine black celery (?!) - unsurprisingly, it is surrounded by beautiful olive groves and is comprised of very old buildings, churches and winding cobbled streets dating back to the 11th century. At Trevi we experienced accommodation in Amber's second ebay find - a quaint hotel, known for its excellent food (and it was scrumptuous).
From Trevi we did a day trip to the town of Assisi, most famous for being the place and containing the church/monastery, where San Francesco (the Patron Saint of Italy) lived. The lower church of San Francesco, was our favourite so far, the quality of the frescoes on the low arched roof was amazing.
We spent the majority of our days resting and going for relaxing, picturesque walks around the outskirts of Trevi.
