This might get a bit bitty now as we spent the last week weaving around – our last week of major road trips and still trying to fit everything in. Needless to say we have failed but are glad to note that we have left plenty to see on our next visit ……

Unusually for us we decided to drive to Canberra via the scenic route even though this probably tripled the mileage and against all advice! It meant going through the “Victorian Alps”. Yet another fine example of original Australian names! This was amazing – another completely different part of this vast country, not at all how you think of Australia – a bit more like, well, Switzerland or Austria really ….. The only things that were slightly disconcerting were the eucalyptus trees instead of pines all along the road and the notices warning of kangaroos and wombats, and then of course signs announcing “Bush Tucker Creek” or “Wattle Creek”. Seeing signs for ski hire instead of surf boards was most bizarre.

We spent that night in a motel (also courtesy of wotif.com) in a place called Wangaratta on a major highway next to Macdonalds. Life’s rich pageant …..
