After a day in Bruges, we found out that there must be two main attractions: Chocolate and lace. Every street seemed to have at least few shops of either type. Amongst these shops were the canals, horses with a clever "crap-catching contraption", the scent of love and romance, a huge clock tower with 354 steps to the top (The sign said 366, but I counted 354; you may choose to trust me or a Belgian stranger) and of course the ever-popular Belgian waffle. Our search for the perfect Belgian waffle started in Brussels, I think that may have been explained earlier. Due to the unsatisfactory first attempt, we decided to continue on our quest. We tried store bought, chocolate covered waffles, but they just did not fit the bill. We tried all sorts of pastries that looked somewhat like waffles, but alas, they too failed. Eventually, on the morning before leaving the county of Belgium, We stopped along the path to find ourselves next too a very promising waffle shop. Here, we ordered in hopes of fulfilling our dream. It was a complete success. The pleasure of that symphony for my mouth cannot be explained in my words, or typed on this Dutch keyboard's keys. I must say though, our Dutch ancestors pulled through again, and as I sit here in the Netherlands writing about what happened a couple days ago, I realize that the Belgian waffle was not the king of the waffle world, but on the contrary, it is the Dutch "stroopwafle" or syrup waffle that I am munching on now that reigns supreme in the kingdom of the waffle. After all was said and done, our stay at "the passage hostel" was very fulfilling, and our day in Bruges was nothing less than fantastic. The only thing that could make it better would be having someone a little more romantic by my side. You can only do so many things in Belgium's most romantic city with two other men next to you. Eventualy you all get an overload of that girly "chick-flick" feeling. I guess thats fine too sometimes. We just need to take it in portions.
