So after spending the night in Sundance, Wy. our plan was to head out to attempt to see Devil's Tower National Park (located near Sundance and Hulett, Wy). We awoke to find the ground snow covered as had been predicted. No worries, it had only covered the grass, the roads were passable.
Devil's Tower was the first national monument in the US, established in 1906 by Teddy Roosevelt. It is another of this country's amazing geological wonders, as it is described as a monolithic igneous intrusion or volcanic neck; I would refer to it as a giant cone of rock that jutted up out of the earth to form a tower, millions of years ago. Evidently, it was featured in the 1977 film Close Encounters of the Third Kind. This a sacred site for many Native Americans and is known as Bears Lodge. At the site you can see many prayer cloths hanging in the trees. Go to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devils_Tower_National_Monument

Unfortunately for us, that was about the only thing we were able to view that day as it was cloudy and foggy. However, all was not lost, as our entrance fee was covered by the park pass we had purchased earlier in the week and it is only ~ 4hrs. from Miles City, Mt. where we were headed next.
