Maybe the most amazing city in the world
From South And Central America in 5ish months in Buenos Aires, Argentina on Jan 27 '07
Finally I arrived in Buenos Aires after 13 hours on a plane !! I knew that I had landed in an amazing city , mainly because I have been here before and seen most of the sites. But what was also great about landing here was the clear blue sky, the heat and the feeling I was going to eat something amazing today. Oh and the men. It almost felt as if I was in Italy ...
I checked into my hotel and went for a walk around San Telmo which is the Tango district. It was also the district renowned for Southern European immigration. This area looks like it has been literally transported from Southern Italy to BA . The cobbled streets, stray dogs and their mess makes me feel quite at home, especially in the sun! I am making it sound horrible but I love the gritty, dirtiness that give this district so much character.
To be fair, I did look like a crazy vagrant woman, having walked around all day in the heat, but I did feel a tiny bit insulted!
Later on, I went out and had every conceivable part of a cow imaginable ( slight exaggeration) with a couple of people I met in my hostel. We went to a restaurant called Siga La Vaca ( follow the cow) where you can eat as much beautiful steak as you want, as many salads as you want , a desert and a bottle of wine per person for about 8 pounds. As you can imagine , I was in heaven but I did feel slightly guilty about the carcass I practically demolished. Oh well, that´s life.
I have also taken a trip around BA´s nature reserve, mainly because the city was so hot ! It was such a good alternative place to visit because the air is so clean and there is a tiny beach next to the Rio Plata. You can´t swim in it as it is filthy, but it was nice just to chill out and drink mate ( the essential Argentine drink which is literally an extension of the hand of about 99% of the population) with my new found friends.
I walked around the center today and went to BA´s famous Cafe´Tortoni. It is famous for its coffee and basically for being a rich porteño hang out. To be honest, it is too pretentious for words, the coffee is about 3 times what you pay ordinarily for a disgusting cup of minging coffee and there is nothing particularly Argentinean about it . And on top of all of this, I paid for my coffee and as I was leaving , a waiter followed me out and accused me of running off without paying . To be fair, I did look like a crazy vagrant woman, having walked around all day in the heat, but I did feel a tiny bit insulted !
I am going to Bariloche tomorrow as I have had enough the city in this heat. I will keep you updated and hopefully have photos to show you and more updates. By the way, did I mention that it is really hot here ? I wonder how cold it is in England ....?
