After 3 relaxing days up north (we nearly touched the border with Colombia!) we have finally made it to Quito, capital of Ecuador and the second highest capital in Latin America after La Paz. The city is set in a hollow at the foot of the volcano Pychincha (4,795m).
The first night and day we spent in Old town, its colonial center, with its steep and narrow cobbled streets (UNESCO heritage site). The hostal was more of a Club Med for 20 year olds and we were lucky to sleep below the roof terrace (which at night serves as a bar come club). Luckily for us, we did not have to pay upon check out as we complained to the staff (saved USD 25 ex 12% tax). That was a bonus and so we celebrated it with a couple of Pina Coladas and beers in New City (during Happy Hour of course..).
New City is not very interesting from a cultural point of view, but it is extremely bubbly!!
Here we managed to find a Central America guide book and also sorted out the last bits and pieces of our Galapagos trip on July 1st.
If you do not hear from us for the next 10 days or so it is because we will be cruising around these islands and doing a dive every now and then .-)
