"For the Chinese Labor Day holiday we took a short trip to the village of Ping An, just two hours north of Guilin, to the area known as the 'Dragon's Backbone' Rice Terraces. Here you will find thousands of curving rice paddies cut away from the mountains and stone pathways that wind through small villages only accessible by foot. Hiking the mountain trails provided some of the most breathtaking vistas we've ever seen. Not only are the terraces beautiful, but they represent an incredible genius in agricultural engineering. Though the fields are one of the most widely photographed images in books and postcards of this region, both our digital and film camera decided to stop working when we arrived. Unfortunately, we'll have to settle for someone else's photograph of the terraces pulled off the net."
