The Sweet Sound of Gunfire
From The First Lap - 1995 in Karachi, Pakistan on Jul 12 '95
As i touched down in Karachi, my heart was racing. What the hell was i thinking? I thought that as soon as i got off the plane i would be whisked away by madmen and be used as a Gimp for the enjoyment of the warmongers.
My life of gimpness was spared though when the immigration officials said i didn't have a visa and i would have to be detained. Normally that would be cause for alarm but i simply thought "Cool!" The officials took away my passport and left me in the empty transit lounge for 2 days until my connection to Dubai arrived from Singapore. And oh what fun i had in that lounge! All i could do was watch the very infrequent planes leave and listen to the faint sound of gunfire as i tried to get to sleep. I did manage to watch a Pakistani soap on TV though - no idea what they were saying but by the time i left, things were looking grim for our hero. He had just been caught snooping in the tribal chief's tent and i think he was about to be gimpified!

I also had a run in with a local man. I don't know where he came from but he staggered into the lounge, completely pissed out of his brain. He then proceeded to piss on the floor right in front of me. But wait, there's more! He then took off his turban, soaked up the gallons of urine that was on the floor, and then offered it to me! When i recoiled in horror he started to get a bit angry and threatening. Luckily a couple of security guards (nice work letting him get in fellas!) turned up and dragged him kicking and yelling to God knows where.
What is it with me that i get in these situations?
By the time the plane arrived the immigration officials gave me my passport back, gave me a boarding pass, and told me that i was only on standby for the connection from Dubai to Cairo. It seems my airport lounge experiences were not ending just yet.
