Homeless Hobo update!
From Embarking on the Journey of my Life in Calgary, Canada on Jun 20 '07
Now continuing on from my previous entry, I was still a homeless hobo the last time I reported. I would now like to announce that my status has changed and I now have a home to go to. I am living with my boss and a work mate, Matt(my boss) and Yestyn (an aussie surprisingly enough) who suggested the idea of sharing his room and giving up his double bed to throw a bunk bed in. So hours after that thought, Yestyn ran the idea through Matt and then called me back and said. “Yep you’re moving in!” So Matt went out to buy a Loft style bunk bed and we threw a double mattress underneath. Yestyn and I went back to MRC to collect all my stuff after work and I was officially moving out.
When I asked Yestyn whether he wanted the top or the bottom? (Figuring I couldn’t be too choosy seeing as though I’m the one invading his room.) He chose the top, and deep down inside I really wanted the bottom because the novelty of climbing up and down the stairs to get to bed(especially when I’m drunk) somehow didn’t appeal to me as much as I liked it as a child. Also the other thing was when you’re lying on the top bunk, the only thing that separates your head from attaching to the ceiling is 30 cms of leeway space. The truth is I can so see myself waking up suddenly and smashing my head on the spikey textured ceiling hanging down like stalactites.
The place is not far from MRC, and I still have my GYM membership there until August as they haven’t cancelled it yet. So now when I go to they gym, I need to ride a push bike for 15 minutes then back home again. I guess that’s my cardio. It’s a basement suite with 2 rooms, with a wide open living room linked to the kitchen and the toilet is just by the kitchen. Probably not the most ideal place to put the toilet but oh well I can’t complain, I have a roof over my head. I am actually quite impressed at how well the basement is renovated to make it not feel like a basement at all. I use to think basements are just full of cob webs and used as storage space for all the old junk that you don’t use anymore and can’t be bothered getting rid of. But it looks like a normal floor of a house, the only thing that reminds you that you are living in a basement is when you look out the windows and you see grass at your eye level.
All in all, everything that I need is here for me, especially the internet. But no cable, which means I can’t watch anymore TV(a good thing I say) so that means more time on the computer or do other productive things. The other good thing about staying with Matt and Yestyn is that since Yestyn’s got a car, I don’t have to grocery shop by bus. Yippy! Or even catch the bus to work. I’ve totally cut my travel expense to nudda apart from the occasional petrol expense here and there. Oh yeh and loads more of sleep in time. We also have a BBQ in the backyard and a fire pit and the past couple of nights we’ve been cooking chicken on the Barbie and have a few beers around the fire pit cooking some marshmallows. The Canadian way of eating marshmallows is, heating up the marshmallows then sandwich it between two Graham wafers with some melted chocholate. They call it “Smores” because after each one you want SOME MORE.
So now that I’ve found a place and have a job that pays me some decent money, I can focus on saving a bit so I can do a bit of traveling after September. Oh and the Calgary Stampede is just around the corner so I’ll be sure to tell you all about how wild it gets if that’s what it lives up to. Time to buy a cowboy hat. Yeehh Hah!
