More Mekong Delta

So our experience in Vietnam continues to be a very positive one, primarily I believe because we started in the quiet Mekong Delta region, instead of the big cities. Cantho, a short boat trip down the Mekong from Chau Doc (even though we took a bus b/c cheaper), was a very pleasant delta city. It is the most cosmopolitan city in the delta but does not approach our definition of cosmopolitan, which was pleasant for us. We strolled down to the river promenade around dusk to witness a kite-flying spectacle being put on by the local kids. We sat on a bench, exchanged funny faces with the adorable little ones, and adored their kite-flying prowess (oh, and their squeaky shoes, though I think Rinat enjoyed that more than I did). We followed that up with a lovely dinner overlooking the river.

Despite the laziness of this river town, our Mekong adventure had to continue the next day. We saw more floating markets, did the fresh coconut thing, saw rice-bread and rice noodle making, which will become very important soon with passover fast approaching. Rinat discovered her new favorite snack, fried dough, yeah, that's right, they fry some dough in a wok filled with boiling oil, a Vietnamese donut. Rinat has also been collecting soap and handing it out to needy people, i.e., any traveler in a public bathroom. She's very giving, especially when it comes to preventing the spread of germs, I think it's the teacher in her.

No more Mekong! To wrap it up, the Mekong was nice but not as jungle-y as I expected. Oh well, jungle adventures will have to wait. It's off to Saigon, where we apparently will find a jungle of a different kind.
