My Christmas Island
From Brazil in 30 Days in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Dec 24 '06
I´ve been a little lax on the blog lately because I´ve largely had very little to write about. I spent Christmas on the island of Morro de Sao Paolo, off the coast of Salvador. It´s a cool place with a village and then five principal beaches.
I ended up spending most of the time lounging around with a few other American travelers from Santa Cruz, CA and one girl from London. We´d spend each day on the beach, swimming and eating Acai (they make the fruit into a kind of sorbet then pile on the granola and fresh fruit - amazing). In the evening, we´d find a dinner spot and then have tropical drinks on the beach. In Morro, about 20 drink vendors set up every night on the beach to blend any kind of fruit and liquor into a cocktail. Our favorite was Cacao and Limon (see picture). Cacao is basically the fruit that hold the chocolate bean.
Post midnight, I´d head off to bed while the others partied the night away. I largely avoided the late night scene after the first night at `Monkey beach´ - no nonhuman monkeys unfortunately, just a lot of really drunk folks. Not really my scene.
On our last day we became quite ambitious, renting snorkels and heading out into the offshore reefs. I saw some very cool tropical fish and even a sea snake (yikes!). Then we took the very long, scenic way to a waterfall, ending our hike at an overlook to see the sunset.
I´m heading back to Rio tomorrow for New Years - I doubt I´ll avoid the parties there :)
Love, Spectra
