Berlin
From Steve, Ken, and Darren's eurotrip! in Berlin, Germany on Sep 17 '06
A lil of the old, a lil of the new, toss in some violence and modren culture mix it all together and pour it out into a city and vola ! Berlin is born. For a city that experienced the violence and struggle for years it has decidedly moved on with itself. While there are still remnants of the wall, ( three pieces i believe ) you will find yourself wondering how a city so torn and divded has healed the past wounds so well. Berlin, since the conflict has turned hyper modren , with architecture , fashion and technology all sky rocketing not to mention the night life. although the culture and people have moved on, there still, and always will remain the bitter scars from the seperation of the east and the west part of the the city, as the remains of the ten foot concrete wall will atest to. Having very little prior knoweldge of the Berlin conflict, a visit to Checkpoint Charlie was in order. The american checkpoint turned outdoor museum will take anywhrere from 1-2 hours to read through and should be followed up by a visit to the remains of at leats one part of the Berlin wall which is also an outdoor museum. Highly recommended to not just war buffs, but to everyone who travels to the city to take an afternoon and dedicate it to learning, or re learning the history of the city. My entries are going to be having to shorten as my time is quite limited, and internet expensive where we are now, and I am falling behind hugly on the blog . Personally, after having a load of trouble on the train, and having to exlplain that i wasn#t trying to cheat the system and get a freee train ride to no less then three conductors it was great to finally see familiar faces. Exploring the cities and heading off the beaten path is what we do best so we set to it, finding all sorts of interesting areas and exploring everywhere the guide book didn't bother to tell us about. Took a full day for checkopint charlie and the berlin wall which was followed by an evening of exploring the cities night live which was and is suposta be lengendary. Well, the thing about legends are just that, there legends and while we had a good time the city was just to darn modren and trendy for my likes. Anyways, the real fun starts in Prauge so read on !
