First Summer Trip-Euro Cup 2008 with Frank and Alan

Frank and Alan arrived on June 6th, the last day of our first year at AISR. They came right to school and Chad began by giving them a tour of the building. When I was finished-we headed home. We went out for a nice dinner that evening and then headed to a friends house for a fun party. We had taken the bikes that night-so watching the boys ride back home that night was pretty funny. The following day we took them downtown Rotterdam for some shopping and that evening Chad took the boys out for dinner and to watch the first games of the Euro Cup. The next day we began our road trip to Zurich. We drove through Germany and arrived in Zurich to a really nice hotel. We immediately headed to the city center to get ready for the big games. We grabbed some food and then enjoyed the atmosphere of the fans from all over Europe. We headed towards the lake-and luckily we found the “Fan Zone”. This is where we stood to watch the Germany/Poland game. The Germans won and we had a good time watching the Germans celebrate. The fans were fun and in good moods and we took some great pictures of excited fans.

The following day we drove to Bern, Switzerland. This is the city where Italy and Holland would be playing. The drive was gorgeous. We took a ton of pictures of gigantic mountains. As we came across the most beautiful scene-the Alps surrounding a brilliant green lake-we realized this was the lake in which we would be staying. Because there were so many fans in Bern-the hotels were booked and we had to stay an hour outside of Bern. Therefore we ended up at this lake. The hotel was typical Swiss architecture and the view we had was priceless. I think it is the most beautiful landscape I have ever witnessed. I even think the 3 boys I was traveling with would agree!

We drove into Bern after spending the afternoon strolling around this magnificent lake. Here, we were able to take in the supportive Dutch fans getting ready for their big game against the 2006 World Cup Champions…Italy! The Dutch were out in full gear-solid orange attire. Because the game was being played in Bern-the Fan Zone was full and we could not get in. We had to squeeze our way into some outdoor bars with TVs. Since we were surrounded by orange-Frank wasn’t the happiest guy…..in addition-Holland beat Italy 3-0. Although extremely disappointed, Frank got through it, and even managed to make friends with a large group of Holland fans. The night was a success for us. The atmosphere the fans create for these games is definitely something to witness.
