The town of Melk was surprise find on the way to Vienna.  Situated on the bend the Danube River in the heart of the Danube Valley is the picture perfect town of Melk, with an imposing Abbey over looking the river.

A recurring theme through out Europe is that throughout history the church has had truck loads of cash - wish it were like that today!

Melk Abbey is a magnificat yellow building sticking out of a cliff face.  As we were there rather late in the day it was pretty quite, so we felt like we had the place to ourselves, quite magical!

Gold detail in the church, there was a LOT of gold here!
