Dicen que esta es una de las ciudades más románticas de la India... estoy de acuerdo... tiene palacios y hospedajes hermosos, es un pedacito de sueño! De esos lugares a los que te gustaría volver!

Romantic CitY!

En el autobús venía una sueca que también viajaba sola, entablamos conversación y hicimos buenas migas, recorrimos juntas el City Palace, el palacio más grande de Rajasthan! La leyenda de su edificación cuenta que en una ocasión, el rey Maharana Udai Singh mientras estaba de cacería, tuvo un encuentro con un sacerdote, el cual le recomendó construir un palacio en ese sitio bendecido por agua y montañas. La construcción comenzo en 1159 y continuó a lo largo del reinado de los siguientes 22 maharanas!!! Así es, cada uno iba anexando un palacio o jardin a la estructura original... está por ejemplo un palacio dedicado a una princesa cuya belleza era disputada por dos pretendientes... la princesa no podía consentir que la disputa se resolviera con la sangre de alguno de los dos batidos en duelo, así que decidió ser ella la que pereciera...

Luego fuimos al Jagdish Temple ... asi como nuestra confusion de 300 virgenes todas siendo la misma al final del cuento... sucede lo mismo en India con sus Dioses... hay 3 principales: Vishnu, Shiva (el destructor del mal) y Brahma (el creador). Y cada uno tiene diferentes encarnaciones... este templo en particular alaba a Vishnu como Jaggannath, Dios del Univeso!

Por la tarde paseamos y paramos a tomarnnos un chai y chatarra, por la noche cenamos en un hotelito divino que tiene vistas hacia el lago, celebramos la dicha de habernos encontrado para compartir paseos y una buena botella de vino! Cotorreamos sin parar! Saliendo encontramos otro sitio para tomarnos un chai antes de irnos a la cama... bueno, por poco y no lo logramos! Cuando queríamos partir ya nos habian encerrado! Hay algunos hoteles que tienen hora de llegada despues de la cual cierran sus puertas... pues los hombrecitos pensaron que eramos huespedes y se fueron a dormir despues de haber cerrado la reja! Jeje, hasta las luces habian apagado! Pero logramos encontrar el tiembre y con la pena los tuvimos que despertar...

Al día siguiente me despedí de Loella que partía rumbo a Goa. Por la mañana visite un haveli, una casa antigua, que ha sido restaurada y puesta en exibición para explicar un poco como era la vida en aquellos tiempos...

Llame al amigo de un amigo y me dio un tour en motocicleta, fuimos al Monsoon Palace, que ahora esta bastante deteriorado pero tiene unas vistas increibles de la ciudad entera... En los veranos, los maharajas y sus familias solian mudarse a este palacio en las montañas para escapar del calor... También tomamos un ferry para pasear en un jardñin que está en medio del lago...

Udaipur

After 2 night bus rides I arrived early in the morning in Udaipur... no idea where to stay… I saw a girl from the bus catching a rickshaw and asked if she´d mind sharing… we ended up sharing a room at one of the places recommended in the Lonely Planet. Our room had a lovely view of the Pichola Lake, straight from our window we could see the "Jag Niwas"  (Now world wide famous Lake Palace Hotel) … After a shower we went up to the terrace to have some “Indian” pancakes, which actually resemble a French crepe…

So we started our day at the City Palace, huge beautiful place. It is actually very interesting to get a guide because it is very big and it holds many stories and generations within… Actually, its construction has an interesting legend associated with it. Apparently, Maharana Udai Singh was hunting one day when he met a holy man meditating on a hill overlooking the Lake Pichhola. The hermit blessed the Maharana and advised him to build a palace at this favourably located spot with a fertile valley watered by the stream, a lake, an agreeable altitude and an amphitheater of low mountains. Maharana followed the advise of the hermit and founded the city in 1559 A.D. After this king, a total of 22 succeeding Maharanas have added several palaces and structures to the complex.

Then we payed a visit to the Jagdish Temple, a good example of Indo - Aryan architecture, not that I know much about that, but that’s the way it is! Hehe :) A young man came along and gave me a tour of the place, explaining that…

Later on we had a couple of chais and snacks on the road. The best part was our dinner at a lovely hotel that overlooks the Pichola Lake. We had a feast!!! All Indian dishes accompanied by a great bottle of red wine… it was our first drink in India, the night view was like a fairy-tale… we could not stop chatting so we ended up some place else having 2 more chais at a nearby hotel before heading off to bed… funny thing is that we got locked in!!! some hotels have a curfew, they lock the gates at 10 or 11… we were way passed the time and they locked the place and went off to bed thinking we were sleeping in that place… we had to find our way through the dark, ring a bell and ask for the gate key hehe!

If you come to Udaipur you will most likely end up watching a James Bond film, yes Octopussy was filmed here, so there are scheduled shows everyday for tourists ;) I missed it cause I was only two days there, but it shall be an interesting and resting experience after having walked through the city…

My last day I went to see a haveli, a heritage house most likely found in this region of the country… they have actually restored the place and have tried to make it look as it did before, it is a museum like walk because there are signs explaining how the people used to live back then… after lunch I met up with Sharad, a friend of a friend, who showed me around the city. We went to check out a garden in the middle of one of the lakes… and then we went to see another palace set up on a hill, this used to be the summer residency of the royal family, it has nice views, especially during the sunset :)
