Down-Under Mountains

From Down Under - Spring 2006 (or is that Fall...?) in Katoomba, Australia on Nov 20 '06

Upon leaving Sydney, we headed west into the burning Blue Mountains.  As recommended by Lisa, we headed to the Conservation Hut, near Wentworth Falls and proceeded to hike down into the mountains.  Down into the mountains?  Yes, in fact the Blue Mountains may be at elevation from Sydney's prespective, but they are really an eroded tableland, not mountains!  Anyways, we had a nice hike on the 30+ degree humid day nonetheless!  Max was happy to be carried on D's back most of the way (including up the ladders!) and 'bub-bubbed' his way along the route, making sure we did not catch any animals by surprise...

In summary, very cool cliffs - saw some neat parrots in the wild (common bird down here), and although only 6km, the hike was pretty strenuous since it was straight down, then straight up a cliff face, with only a coule km of horizontal travel.

We call them 'canyons', but maybe I'm being picky...

The plan for our next day was to head up through the Blue Mountains to the Hunter Valley and visit Rosemount Winery, but our only two routes were both closed due to fire, so we ended up with a very long day of driving the long way up the coast to Port MacQuarie for the night, a stopover on the way to Byron Bay.

Cheer,

T&D&m
