Contemplations Next to the Mekong

I'm sweating from the humid weather.  Before me lies the Mekong, in all her majestic beauty.  On the other side of the river is Laos.  I watch as the fisherman in long boats go about their daily routines.  The sky is full of clouds, moving ever so slow.  In contrast, the mighty Mekong races forward.  I am in awe.

I feel like a quiet observer as the fisherman limps in my direction, towards his crutch propped against a log.  I'm brought back to earth by his disfigured arm and bad leg.  Guilt sweeps over me as I'm in his presence - young, fully functional, and enough money to travel in his country.  We both sit, watching the river.

There isn't a huge sentiment against Americans, maybe just some irritation with outsiders in general. They usually don't make a distinction between American or not, anyone non-thai is a "Farang".

Quite profound. Is there a lot of residual sentiment in the area about the American presence in the Viernam era?
