The motorbike tour
From Southeast Asia Summer 2006 in Vietnam on Aug 06 '06
Ok, so i know you all think we're a little crazy for doing a motorbike tour for 3 days but it really is the only way to travel in Vietnam. So we left behind our horrible touristy bus (bargain but still horrible and touristy) and headed off with Lam and Phuoc for 3 days to see the real Vietnam. Here are some things we saw and learnt as we don't have time to go into all the detail...
- Shrimp farms
Broom Broom
- Pigs being transported in big baskets on the back of a motorbike-photos to come. 2 pigs on each motorbike= 150kg!
-Effects of Agent Orange on the surrounding countryside.
- A dog being tied up ready for dinner (just as well Annie and Mollie live in such a nice country!!)
- Rice paper making (rice paper is used for making spring rolls etc.
- Silk worm growing and silk making.
- General local people laughing at our blondness and being kind and giving us their bananas.
- Had some fresh corn on the cob, dragon fruit and DURIAN= ERGH!
- Saw the beautiful countryside- we climbed the mountains to 2000m
- Erratic weather- downpours lasting only 5 mins before the sun comes out again!
- Seeing a minority etholinguistic village and meeting the 101 year old chief!
- Watching a traditional dance in the minority village
- Going to an Island and giving the local children sweets. They were so shy of white people it took them a while to come and get their sweeties!
- Eating traditional Vietnamese food with Lam and Phuoc and learning some Vietnamese slang!
- Tried some snake wine (they sort of made us)- wine, well very very strong wine with fermenting cobras and geckos in it...nice
- Saw a beautiful waterfall
And lots more...but we can tell you all about that when we get back.
Basically, we had a fantastic time, survived and it was one of the highlights of our trip so far!
