28 hours on the Netravati express from the LTT terminus in Mumbai. We went 2nd AC and it was great.
Allappey (aka Alappuzha, pronounced Alapoora) is a quiet Indian town with an ocean beach (swiming not advised, though it looks OK to me!). It's main claim is access to the Kerala backwaters. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alappuzha
