The drive today from Vermont to Lancaster, New Hampshire was beautiful even though we hit off again on again rain showers. We stopped at a nice RV Park that is located on a lake once more. It was pouring when we arrived and we did some housework and did the wash.

It was iffy this morning with rain continuing off and on. We hung around the motorhome and did some personal business until about noon and then decided to venture out. As luck would have it we had an absolutely wonderful time and saw some beautiful country. New Hampshire’s White Mountains are quite different than the Adirondacks and the Green Mountains. The White Mountains are much rockier and higher. Franconia’s Notch State Park is an amazing place – Mike and I visited this area on our previous US trip in 2002. Today there was poor visibility with clouds hiding the mountain tops, however, it was still beautiful. After we left the Notch we stopped at The Flume – a popular trail following a narrow flume of water that has carved a passage through the mountainside. Since we took the hike on our last trip and because of the weather (it was cold) we passed on the trek. We did stop for lunch and I took a photo of the only moose and bear we will probably see (see photos). There are signs everywhere in the northeast about slowing down for moose – so far we haven’t seen any. We left The Flume and headed east on the Kancamagus Highway, a beautiful route through the White Mountains. The sun came out and stayed out the rest of the day. It was amazing, there were beautiful views, waterfalls and colors – even a covered bridge. The road follows the Swift River and you can certainly see where it gets it’s name. Before heading toward home on Highway 302 we drove through Conway which is a wonderful town with loads of hotels, restaurants, shopping, etc. It would be a great place to stay. The ride back to Lancaster was another amazing journey. Route 302 follows the Saco River and passes through Crawford Notch State Park. We noticed many large ski areas along the way. The White Mountain Resort and Golf Course is located along this highway and we decided next time we’re camping in their parking lot! What a beautiful spot! When we got back we decided to go into Lancaster for a bite to eat and a visit to the grocery store. We drove all over town (such as it was) and could not find a restaurant. We stopped a couple on the street and asked them where to go. They recommended a place (really dumpy looking) called Scorpio’s that was a sports bar/pizza parlor. Since we are both Scorpios we decided to go and ended up having a great dinner. If you don’t know where to go always ask the locals.
