South East Coast of Thailand!
From My Travels in Pattaya, Thailand on Nov 09 '07
After the hustle and bustle of Bangkok we took a bus too Pattaya, where we had already paid for accommodation for three nights. Pattaya itself is situated on a beach, the beach however isn't the best Thailand has to offer. Its extremely long but only 20ft deep, and when you consider the fact that its rammed with locals and well... Germans! Doesn't leave allot of room for anything else.
After booking accommodation in Pattaya we were later informed that it is the sex capital of Thailand! This became apparent as it began to get dark! The whole city comes alive and is crammed with Go Go bars! As you walk around you are constantly hassled by the dozens of local girls shouting "sexy man" and grabbing you by the arms, I say arms… It was more like any part of the body they could get there hands on!!! I was quite flattered at first, until I noticed the two 60 year old blokes behind me getting the same treatment!
As you walk around the streets of Pattaya, you notice the thousands of Western man/ Thai girl couples waking around! Apparently Pattaya is famous for it! Luckily for us we found a pool bar and pretty much hid out there for a couple of days!
Our hotel in Pattaya was a giant building, that has recently been converted from a conference centre too a hotel. As a result of this about half the building is just completely empty, it was like walking around the set of a horror film! And too top it off, we were without any electricity for the last day! The whole place was lit up by candle light, scary stuff!
So after the ordeal that was Pattaya we finally found our selves a bit of paradise in Koh Somet! Koh Somet is a small island just off the South East coast of Thailand! Its a really cool, chilled out place where you can just lounge around on the beach all day, and sit on the beach drinking cheap alcohol at night! The restaurants on the beach put carpets and bean bags as it gets dark and you pretty much just relax on the beach watching fireworks and the locals as they perform a kind of spinning fire act! The club in Koh Somet is also situated on the beach. The couple of nights that we went had what can only be described as the Thai black eyed peas performing!
Koh Somet was definitely made better by the people we met there, we met a couple of lads from Sweden who were completely addicted to this stuff called Snus which is like tobacco in a tea bag which they put under there lip! Apparently its like smoking ten cigarettes, I thought why not and tried one. I then spent the next ten minutes spinning and trying not to throw up, so it was discreetly chucked! Not for me! I replied the next time they offered!
We also met a German girl who was traveling with her Belgium cousin! All of which spoke perfect English and thought it strange that Me Matt & Dave could only speak the one language! So after several conversations about how lazy us Brits were and vast quantities of alcohol! We called it a night and retired back to our beach huts!
The following day we caught another ferry and bus too Koh Chang. The island of Koh Chang is roughly five times the size of Koh Somet, and can easily be mistaken for Jurassic park! As we approached the island you can just about make out the summit of some of the mountains which almost act as the back bone to the islands! The island itself is covered in lush green vegetation and almost screams out to you! We later found out that the screaming is caused by lizards in full swing of their mating season! Lizards by the way pretty much rule the island, their everywhere!
The resort we stayed at is called Bailan Beach and is apparently a new development! If I'm honest its probably best suited to couples! However the beach itself is beautiful, it looks like something from a post card! And on the first night we had the luxury of being able to see the sunset, and just like any self respecting tourist would do it was cameras at the ready! You've got to check out some of the pictures I'll post of the sunset! It sounds strange to say but the sunset actually looked fake! It looked like some sort of oil painting was slotted across the horizon!
That evening we took a leisurely stroll into town where Matty proceeded to get hustled by a pool shark! Never mind Matty, better luck next time!
On the way back to our beach huts we stumbled across a club called the lemon tree, which was definitely the oddest location for a club that I've ever been too! It was sort of like a tree house, it literally had branches from the surrounding trees sticking out of the walls and across the dance floor!
So after a few more beers and a couple of bruised shins later we headed back to our beach huts!
From Koh Chang its across the border into Cambodia where we hope to catch a glimpse of Anjolina Jolie!
