We begin the treacherous walk down the stairs. Several years ago the government installed handrails because so many people had fallen down. The stairs are narrow and steep. They were built very narrow so that anyone walking up them could not walk forward but sideways so they could never look at their gods or their emperor. They would also have to walk downward sideways because they could never turn thier backs on their gods or their emperor.
