The motel is named for Alcala in Spain, and is built in a Spanish style, with white stucco walls and arched walkways in an L-shape, with ample parking in the corner of the 'L' and gardens around the edges.
The office was right next to George St, and the proprieter was welcoming and helpful. Our room was on the ground floor, in the far corner. A sliding door opened onto the lounge, the bedroom was directly opposite, an archway led to a good-sized kitchen, and the bathroom was through that.
The lounge had two single beds that were also sofas; I had one of them, and it was firm and comfortable. My workmate had the queen-sized bed in the bedroom, which she found to be comfortable. The wardrobe had plenty of coathangers.
The lounge had a good-sized mirror, a coffee table and two armchairs, and the phone had a double jack, so plugging in a laptop for dial-up internet was the easiest I've ever had. A wall heater worked well.
The kitchen was well-equipped and had a breakfast-bar with 4 stools; the only drawback was that the fridge didn't work. It wasn't an issue for us, but would have been if I'd brought food to cook. The proprieter told us that it had only just broken down, so I suppose that getting it fixed on a weekend was unlikely. The complementary sachets of drinks included hot chocolates and ground coffee packs, with a coffee plunger jug.
The bathroom was well-supplied, including extra towels, and all towels were replaced daily. The shower was over a sitting-type bath, so bathing a small child would be easy.
We had a continental breakfasts delivered, which came on time. Tea and filtered coffe came in pots, and were freshly made.
Locking the door from the outside was difficult - I think the mechanism to prevent you locking yourself out was stiff.
This was a good place for a weekend stay, as we did, and if the fridge and door were seen to, would be good for a longer stay, including for a family.

If you’re in Auckland don’t forget to check out Shakespeare Regional Park, my husband and I really liked the place.
