Passengers have spoken of their terror after their aircraft skidded and was forced to abort take-off at Dubai International Airport yesterday morning.
Those on board Biman Bangladesh Airlines Flight BG 006 told 7DAYS they felt lucky to be alive after the terrifying incident. “It was a nightmare come true. We thought the flight was on fire and we would burn to death. Thank God we are all alive,” said Mohammed Moinul en.wikipedia.org/wiki /Islam" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam" target="_blank">Islam, a London-based chef on board the flight with his wife and four children.
Last night, there were also reports of angry confrontations between passengers and Dubai airport authorities after several flights were cancelled, having earlier been delayed for many hours. Many of the irate passengers claimed that they should have been warned about the delays before they checked in.
In total 236 passengers were rescued from the plane with 14 suffering injuries.
Most of the injured were hurt “in the panic that erupted when the accident occurred,” a spokesperson for the airline said. The front tyre of the Dubai-Dhaka flight, which was in transit from London, burst during take off, the nose hit the ground and the plane skidded on the runway before grinding to a halt. The accident came on the same morning as another incident in which Cathay Pacific confirmed one of its cargo flights also had a tyre burst as it landed on the same runway.
“We were fast asleep when we heard a loud blast and the entire flight started shaking. People were screaming for help and we saw smoke inside and outside the plane,” said Islam. His wife Razia Begum tried to cling on to her three little children as passengers were forced into the seats in front of them.
“The aircraft was not travelling at a very high speed. Suddenly the brakes were applied followed by a deafening sound. I clung on to my children and asked them to pray,” said Razia. Abdul Qadir suffered neck and back injuries during the incident, but said he felt lucky to be alive. “We were the last ones to evacuate the plane since we were right behind everyone else. People were screaming for help and people were even running towards the door to jump out,” he said.
Another passenger rescued from the plane said: “My father was injured as he attempted to get down the emergency slide. He fell from it and hit the runway. He is being treated for back injuries. It was a terrifying experience for us.” Passengers told of mass panic and screaming before emergency services reached the scene and managed to evacuate all the passengers and crew.
“Even the flight attendants were clueless about what needed to be done. Everyone was panicking. They tried to calm the passengers but it was useless and everyone was screaming to get out,” said Abu Bashar. Qadir, who was recovering from his ordeal at a Dubai hotel, added: “I do not know when they are sending us on to Dhaka. I am scared to take another flight now.”
