Changed plans and stopped off in Northern Drakensberg as it was recommended and i think it was a wise decision. The view from the backpackers alone is spectacular.
A range of rugged green mountains stretch across the horizon ; and in the fore-ground; wide open grassy plains. Its the kind of landscape you could imagine wizards and goblins!
Day one was a six hour hike to the Ampitheatre summit and Tugela Falls. You'd think experience would have told me i don't cope well with ( South African) hikes. However , I was assured it was fine for7 to 70 yr olds.
i'd like to meet that 70yr old.The hardest part of a hard hike was a 45 degree climb between two peaks that went on forever.
All moans aside , it was an amazing day.Views from the summit were awesome .
The falls are the second highest in the world at 850 metres. So high you can only see the first drop from the cliff edge.
Day 2 was a trip abroad to the tiny country of Lesotho ( le - soo - too). Surrounded by S.A it retains a other worldly air. Unvisited by tourists apart from us,it really felt like a foreign land with farmers and herders in traditional dress.
