On 8th January 1297, the Guelphs led by Franois Grimaldi, known as "Malizia" ("the Cunning"), seized the fortress of Monaco. According to one chronicler, Franois Grimaldi penetrated the walls in the guise of a Franciscan monk. The statue is of him just before getting into the palace in his disguise. What makes the story so interesting is that his family still rules Monaco 700 years later. "Princess Grace" was what actress Grace Kelly was called after she married the then prince. Talk about a dynasty!
