I dont advise ignoring your consulates advice on not going to dangerous places in the world but the hype about this area of Turkey is out of hand. We stopped in the most 'dangerous' area for a coke and got a flat tyre near the latest outbreak of confrontations without hassle. Sarnliurfa and Harran are definately areas you need to see as well as Mt Nemrut with its stunning stone heads and magnificent sunset/rise.
