One of the pair had crept into camp and in complete silence. He was making his way around the tow-truck when Ranj spotted him. The elephant sniffed once then retreated back to the long grass "

Landrover across the Serengeti Plains to Maasai Mto wa Mbu | Sep 11 08'

by actonsteve a 40 year old male from London, on vacation in Mto wa Mbu

"A Serval shot across the road this afternoon. An exceptionally rare cat and also the ubiquitous hyenas could be seen in the distance. They travel immense distances looking for food as they fan out across the plains. One big surprise was seeing a wild cat. Not a big cat, but the original household tabby gone wild stalking the long grass by the side of the road. "

The main memory of today is travelling through the scorching Serengeti Plains.  The sun has just bleached this area dry. It consists of littl... Continue reading »

Hunting for the elusive Leopard - Serengeti National Park | Sep 10 08'

by actonsteve a 40 year old male from London, on vacation in Serengeti National Park

"The grey/pink hippos were mostly submerged underwater with just their ears and nostrils showing. They were crammed together letting out their grunts once in a while and would erupt into fights – with great teeth showing. I was on a small ledge near the pool coated with slippery rocks and mud. Watching where you put your feet is a major concern. We were very near the hippos and those yawning teeth were intimidating. Although I didn’t see it people next to me saw a crocodile slip into the water. "

Today has been about Big Cats.  If the Masai Mara was about wildebeest, Ngorongoro about elephants then the Serengeti must be about lions (La... Continue reading »

by actonsteve a 40 year old male from London, on vacation in Serengeti National Park

"Bones and remains of hominid man over two million years old have been discovered in Olduvai Gorge which was once a river. Looking at this bleak alien terrain it’s not hard to imagine a family of hominids travelling together under an unforgiving sun all those millions of years ago"

I’ll describe a scene on the Serengeti this afternoon.  Miombo woodland with a green glade in the centre. Three lions lazing – on... Continue reading »

by actonsteve a 40 year old male from London, on vacation in Ngorongoro

" bought some postcards and going back to the car park the visitors were amused by the antics of those loutish hooligans baboons. One male was particularly big and sitting on the bonnet of a safari vehicle. There are always baboons at the entrance to the park as visitors often have food."

When I unzip my tent here at Ngorongoro and step out a spectacular view greets me..  We are on the lip of the crater here. I can see right ac... Continue reading »
