During the final part of the trip we completed an alternative inka trail with a local Quechua guide to Machu Picchu which takes in the warm jungle, hot springs off the tourist trail, horseriding and staying with the guide“s family in a rustic adobe lodge surrounded by mango and papaya trees. This latter part of the tour was excellent overall although the transport to get there was adventurous and hair-raising! Definitely worth the journey, it is good to go on a more community based and varied inca trail to Machu Picchu.

Hi Andre, Ave and Michel. This alternative trail is a great option because you are not just trekking all the time, this is good for the family (depends how old they are though). The other reason is that you stay a night with a local family. Its a great adventure and the weather is warmer in the jungle. I organised my trip through www.inkamagik.com All the best Caroline

The alternative trail sounds intriguing. We're thinking of taking the kids to Peru in summer 2008. How could we get in touch with a local Quechua guide and would you recommend it for families? Thanks in advance!
